Yin Yoga

Yin Yoga is a style of practice that approaches yoga from a Chinese Medicine lens. In Yin, we work to move the Chi, or energies in the body.

In this mostly floor based practice, you will "hold" a pose or anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes. Yin Yoga aims not to stretch the muscles
but allow the muscles to relax and not take the load, so the deeper tissues can benefit. Tendon and ligament fibers do not stretch as much as muscle fibers can. However, with continued practice, you can learn to allow the muscles to take a backseat, thus getting deeper into the rest of the tissues.

Secondly, Yin is about learning to be still in body and mind. For example: Holding pigeon pose for a few breaths feels great in your glutes and hips (The Physical). Holding pigeon pose for a few minutes will allow you to focus on the breath and be still in your mind, and this is where the magic healing takes place. This is the Energy Work (The Subtle Body). Yin practitioners report feeling more calm, centered, and focused. The physical benefits are often secondary to the energy work as you learn learn to step away from pushing so hard physically and delving more into stillness and breathing.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga that is movement based, one breath one movement, flowing pose to pose (asana). This practice will have you up and moving, building strength, and breathing, maybe even breaking a sweat! Vinyasa yoga is a great way to stay flexible, and mobile. You will see several physical therapy exercises repeated in a yoga flow. For example: Cat/Cow poses are ones that physical therapists and yogis share, as it it so beneficial for our spines.

Classes always end with a short meditation called Savasana. Savasana is a chance to focus on breathing and take some time to disconnect your busy brain. This is how yogis integrate the practice and rest in stillness. It's also great for digestive and immune systems as the mind is able to rest and digest. This is when yogis tap into the parasympathetic nervous system and calm the mind.

Savasana can be both the easiest pose physically, and the most challenging pose mentally and/or emotionally. It can be hard to be still, but with practice, it becomes a healing modality you can tap into all on your own.
